Quake Champions: Bethesda appropriately delivered in its opening moments exactly what its fans wanted, and did so in as explosive a manner as possible. We also could have done with something more than just an easter egg for the new Wolfenstein. They could have devoted all the time they spent on Elder Scrolls to that. I can forgive us seeing nothing of Quake Champions since it’s so new, but what’s going on with Prey? How long has that been in development? Also, I know that VR has serious limitations, but I would have loved to see Fallout 4 in VR, at least to get an idea of how that worked. I loved the variety of environments we were shown and the different types of combat abilities and gameplay showcased.Ī lack of gameplay once again prevailed. Dishonored 2 did well once it got past the psych of teasing gameplay, not delivering, and then delivering after we all got mad.

Quake Champions was certainly the star of the show: it was a surprise announcement that everyone wanted and delighted in, giving just the right amount of teased info for an introduction to a new title. It’d be easy to call it an off-year for Bethesda after their enormous hits last year in Fallout 4 and DOOM, but it’s not quite that. And, thank God, Blink-182 didn’t show up until after the main event was over. No attempts at memes, bad jokes, or weird gimmicks required.

Bethesda opened the show strong (with Quake) and closed strong ( Dishonored 2, detailed gameplay) with professional presentations throughout. That delay, along with the awkward moment during Dishonored 2’s presentation in which Bethesda lead us all to believe we weren’t really getting gameplay, stand out like sore thumbs. That self-praise went on for a bit at a few points during the middle of the show, too, breaking up the action. But a conference that was supposed to start at 10 PM ET didn’t start for fifteen minutes, during which extra delay time we had to sit and listen to (albeit funny) hosts pat Bethesda on the back for its previous exploits. When you had presenters up onstage talking about upcoming games, everything was exciting and interesting.
